MECHANICAL ENGINEERING ADMISSIONS FAQS

How do I submit my graduate application?

You will complete the online Graduate Application.
Make sure you review the “Before You Apply” tab on the Graduate Admission webpage.

Is the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) required for admission?

No; submission of GRE scores is optional.

My English proficiency test scores are lower than the listed minimum scores. Will my application still be reviewed?

No; the ME department will not review your application if your English proficiency test scores are below the minimum scores listed on the Office of Admissions website. You may retake the English proficiency test to raise your score to the minimum score or higher and submit the new scores to the Office of Admissions.

Is it necessary to submit official GRE/TOEFL scores through ETS during the application process, or can they be submitted after getting the offer of admission?

Unofficial copies of test scores can be uploaded using the online graduate application for admission review. Official test score reports should be submitted to UT Dallas directly from the testing agency after admission.

I am missing some of the required documentation for the application. Can my application be reviewed anyway?

No; applications will not be reviewed until all required documentation has been submitted.

I know my test scores, GPA, and other credentials. Can you tell me what my chances are of being admitted before I submit my application with all the required documentation?

No; you must officially submit an application with all required documentation before any evaluation of your credentials can be made. We are not in a position to assess your chances until you apply and go through the admissions process. If you meet the minimum requirements described in the UTD Graduate Catalog, though, your chances of being admitted are good.

I have already submitted my application. How can I see which documents I am still missing?

You can check your To Do List in Galaxy. The To Do List provides a list of outstanding items that are required before your application will be considered complete.

I have submitted all my application materials. How can I check the status of my application?

You can check your application status and To Do List by following the instructions provided here and here.

How much does graduate school cost?

It is difficult to provide an exact total cost for graduate school, as there are many variables that will affect your expenses. We recommend using the Tuition Calculator to estimate the cost of your graduate education.

I am seeking a Teaching or Research Assistantship position. What should I do?

Please review the Department of Mechanical Engineering’s Financial Assistance page for information on assistantship opportunities.

I am interested in applying for scholarships and fellowships. Where can I find information for available scholarships and fellowships?

Please review the Jonsson School Financial Aid page for information on available Graduate Scholarships and Fellowships.

I want to know if I am qualified to join an ME faculty member’s group, but I have not applied to the program yet. Can I contact the faculty member before I submit my application?

We encourage all prospective students to wait until they have been admitted to the program before contacting faculty members about joining their research teams. It is difficult for ME faculty to determine if you are eligible to join their group until you have applied and been admitted.

I received my admission letter. What documents do I need to submit before the semester starts?

After admission, submit official transcripts and other official documentation before enrollment. For guidelines on how to submit, see the Admissions Documentation Guidelines for Applicants and Admitted Students page. To view which documents require official submission, you can check your To Do List in Galaxy.

I was admitted to the ME Graduate Program, but I am unable to attend my original start term. Can I defer my admission?

Yes; students may defer their admission up to two long semesters (excludes summer) from their application start term. You can find the instructions for requesting a graduate deferment here.

I was admitted to another ECS program, but now I would like to switch to Mechanical Engineering. Can I change my program to MECHMS/MECHDR?

No; once you have been admitted to one program, you are not able to transfer your admission to another. You will need to submit a new application for the Mechanical Engineering program.

My application has been denied and I would like to know why. Who do I contact? Can I appeal the decision?

For questions about your admission decision, you may contact megrad@utdallas.edu. If you would like to appeal the decision to deny your application, you may send an appeal request to the MEGRAD email, and you will be provided with further instructions.
