Graduate Advising FAQ’s

Where can I find the degree requirements for the MS/PhD program?

You can find the degree requirements for the ME graduate programs in the Graduate Catalog.

How do I find an advisor?

Firstly, you need to consider what you are passionate about and what your long-term goals are. Secondly, you should research our faculty and find who is best aligned with these interests and goals. Then you can reach out to that faculty member about serving as your advisor. The best way to contact our faculty is by email.

Master’s students are automatically assigned an advisor according to their concentration area but are welcome request another faculty member to be their advisor. PhD students need to secure an advisor by the end of their first semester in the program.

When should I file my degree plan?

All graduate students must submit an approved degree plan within the first two consecutive long semesters of active enrollment in the program. The purpose of this plan is to show how and when requirements will be met. The degree plan is a working document and may be updated regularly to reflect the student’s developing research focus and career goals.

Can I replace a grade by retaking the course?

Yes; you may retake a course to improve your grade. Up to three graduate courses may be repeated. However, no graduate course may be repeated more than once. When a course is repeated, both grades will remain on your record and will be included in your transcript. The higher grade will be used in computing the GPA for purposes of graduation.

Can I be a part-time student and still be supported as a TA or RA?

No; only full-time students can be a TA or an RA. Additionally, master’s students must take the thesis option to be eligible for a funded position.

I am on academic probation. What does this mean, and what should I do next?

If, at the end of a semester, a student’s cumulative GPA is below 3.00, the student will be placed on academic probation. The student must earn sufficient grade points during the next two semesters of registration to raise the cumulative GPA to at least 3.00 exclusive of incomplete (I) grades. Failure to achieve this 3.00 cumulative GPA may result in immediate dismissal from the University.

Please contact our Graduate Program Administrator Ashley Bradberry for further information.

What are the deadlines for defending my thesis/dissertation?

How do I apply for graduation?

Please contact the ME Graduate Program Administrator in order to be made eligible to graduate. The application for graduation is submitted and processed online. You can find important deadlines and steps to apply for graduation posted on the Registrar’s page for Graduating Students.

Can I graduate in the summer?
