GRADUATE

Master’s Degree Program

The program leading to the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering prepares both recent baccalaureate graduates and experienced mechanical engineers for advanced micro-scale and nano-scale mechanical and thermal design and development. Designed to accommodate the needs of working engineers who wish to continue their education, the program offers courses at times convenient for students employed on a full-time basis, as well as a Fast-Track program which accelerates earning a master’s degree.

All students must have an academic advisor and an approved degree plan. These are based upon the student’s choice of concentration, Dynamic Systems and Controls (DSC), Manufacturing and Design Innovation (MDI), Mechanics and Materials (MM), Thermal and Fluid Sciences (TFS). Courses taken without advisor approval will not count towards the 33 semester-hour requirement. Successful completion of an approved course of studies leads to the MSME degree.

MASTER’S PROGRAM MISSION

The mission of the Mechanical Engineering master’s degree program is to provide students with an advanced education in mechanical engineering and prepare them for lifelong learning and successful careers in industry and government. The program prepares both recent baccalaureate graduates and experienced mechanical engineers for the design and implementation of advanced mechanical systems at nano-, micro-, meso- and macro-scales. Our graduates are expected to be key contributors and leaders in industry and/or academia and to further their education by entering a doctoral degree program.

Doctoral Degree Program

The educational objective of the Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering degree program is to prepare talented students for careers in which they will create new technologies and processes for the design, manufacturing and operation of components and systems involving mechanical function, including motion, structural, thermal and fluidic, at all size scales. Given the central role of mechanical engineering in multiple areas of technology, program graduates will be technical leaders in emerging and existing industry in Texas, the nation, and the world.

DOCTORAL PROGRAM MISSION

The mission of the PhD degree program in Mechanical Engineering is to provide students with an advanced education in mechanical engineering and prepare them for lifelong learning and successful professional and/or research careers in industry, government, or academia. The students are expected to achieve the highest level of expertise in a chosen field. The graduates are expected to identify and formulate problems, develop creative solutions to existing and emerging problems with global societal impact.
